The River Stort

Spend an enjoyable afternoon on the three-and-a-half mile River Stort Trail linking Parndon Mill with the Gibberd Garden and visit the Town Park ad Pets Corner on the way.

Parndon Mill is situated on the northern edge of Harlow on the River Stort. The complex of Grade II listed buildings provides 27 studios for artists and designers together with a gallery which stages exhibitions throught the year. The Gibberd Garden was designed by Sir Fredrick Gibberd, master planner of Harlow New Town, in the ground of his own home. It has been described as one of the most important gardens of the 20th century.

Set on the side of a small valley, with terraces, pools and streams, it provides the setting for architectural salvage, large ceramic pots, a gazebo and a moated castle. There is also an avenue of lime trees, a waterfall in the brook and even a children's moated castle with drawbridge.

Canal Boat Project

The Canal Boat Project, set up in 1989 is based in Harlow and provides disability access boats on the River Stort.

From small beginnings this not-for-profit organisation started out with just one boat - Stortford Challenger - launched in 1999. It now has three more vessels - Dawn Treader, Red Watch and Stort Daybreak - offering day trips, weekend breaks and holidays.

The canal boats not only provide disability access but also enables people with disabilities to take a full and active part in the boating experience. They can be hired with or without a crew, and scores of individuals and organisations have enjoyed the River Stort boating experience, with many returning year after year.

The project is supported by a team of volunteers who skipper the boats, help with maintenance or administration and support events. Friends of the project also provide vital fund-raising support.
